Alsnog almaar kan zijn het Koerdische gebied erg achtergesteld. Het percent analfabeten kan zijn onder andere 3 keertje hoger dan in het westen met Turkije, dit inkomensniveau kan zijn een stuk lager en de zuigelingensterfte kan zijn er beter. In een grondwet is tot op heden geen melding gemaakt aangaande Koerden, precies zomin dat geldt wegens alle verschillende minderheidsgroepen. Behandeling met het Koerdisch voor officiële evenementen kan zijn verboden en tot 1991 was dit zelfs volstrekt verboden Koerdisch te communiceren. Bovenal tussen druk van Europese mensenrechtenorganisaties en dit Turkse verlangen teneinde het lidmaatschap over de Europese Unie te verwerven is de minderheden in Turkije toch langzaam meer vrijheden toegestaan.
